The padding that lies beneath newly installed carpet can play a big role in extending the carpet’s life, as well as contributing to its luxurious feel. Padding is available in several thicknesses and densities for just the right degree of walking support and comfort. In general, the padding installed beneath wall-to-wall carpeting should be about 3/8-inch thick. The choice of pad density varies according to the level of traffic and heavy wear that it will endure. Aside from making the carpet feel good underfoot, padding acts as a shock absorber to deflect wear and tear away from the overlying carpet. In addition, padding should be valued for its ability to muffle sound and provide insulative protection from cold floors.
