When installing carpeting or (particularly) wood flooring in new construction, it is important the flooring material has time to adjust to its new surroundings. Consequently, experienced installers are careful to allow wood plants enough time to acclimate to the temperature and humidity levels of their intended location. With the indoor environment carefully insulated from sudden heat/humidity fluctuations, it can take several days for wood flooring to adapt to the point where post-installation shrinkage and expansion can be avoided. Carpeting also needs time to similarly adjust. Moreover, in cases where wood flooring overlies radiant-heat flooring systems, care must be taken not to change thermostat-controlled temperatures too drastically. The beauty of radiant heat is that it is steady and even.
