After a carpet’s fiber is attached to the backing during the manufacturing process, it is sheared to give the carpet its texture. The three main types of carpet texturing are loop pile, cut pile and selectively sheared pile. Level loop features fibers stitched to the backing that have not been cut off at the top. This pile has excellent crush resistance, is easy to maintain and wears well. Cut pile refers to looped fibers that have been cut off at their tops, while selectively sheared styles combine level loop and cut pile. At the top of the cut pile group is the smooth-cut pile known as plush. Its high density and smooth texture make it desirable for formal areas, but it does show footprints. Saxony, which is similar to plush, uses a heavy yarn.
